Surface Finishes for CNC Milled Parts
CNC-milled parts often show visible tool marks. To improve surface quality or appearance, MachMaster offers a range of finishes that enhance both function and aesthetics.
As machined
The part is left as-is from CNC machining, offering a cost-effective solution with visible tool marks and a standard roughness of 3.2 μm (126 μin), plus deburring for safe handling.
Anodizing
Anodizing enhances corrosion and wear resistance by forming a protective oxide layer on aluminum or titanium surfaces. It also allows for decorative coloring and improves overall part durability.
Alodine
Applied primarily to aluminum, Alodine coating creates a corrosion-resistant and paint-ready surface, significantly improving both protection and finish durability.
Bead Blasting
Bead blasting produces a uniform matte finish by removing surface imperfections. Commonly used to improve appearance before anodizing, plating, or coating.
Brushing
Brushing applies a fine, directional texture using abrasive belts or pads. Often used for decorative metal finishes or to visually mask minor surface defects.
Powder Coating
This dry finishing process applies powder to metal parts, then cures it into a tough, uniform coating. It offers excellent durability and is available in many colors and textures.
Electroplating
Electroplating uses electric current to deposit a metal layer onto a part, enhancing hardness, conductivity, and appearance with finishes like chrome or nickel.
Polishing
Polishing removes surface flaws and creates a reflective, smooth finish. It’s used to improve aesthetics, reduce friction, and prepare parts for secondary coatings.
CNC Milling Tolerances for Custom Parts
Our CNC milling tolerances adhere to ISO standards to ensure precision and functionality. For metal parts, we apply ISO 2768-m, while for plastic parts we follow ISO 2768-c. This systematic approach guarantees accuracy, interchangeability, and optimized manufacturability for every project.

CNC Milling Overview
What’s the Difference Between CNC Milling and CNC Turning?
The key difference lies in how material is removed. In CNC milling, a rotating cutting tool moves across a stationary block or bar of material to create the desired shape. In contrast, CNC turning (using a lathe) involves spinning the material while a stationary tool shapes it.
CNC milling is ideal for complex geometries, flat surfaces, and irregular profiles. CNC lathes are better suited for cylindrical or conical parts like shafts or bushings.
How does CNC Milling Work?
CNC milling begins with a digital 3D model designed in CAD software. This model is converted into G-code, which instructs the CNC milling machine how to shape the material.
Unlike CNC turning, where the material spins, CNC milling uses a high-speed rotating cutting tool to remove material from a fixed block or bar. The tool path is computer-controlled, ensuring high accuracy and repeatability in producing CNC milled parts.
Why Choose CNC Milling Services?
CNC milling offers exceptional flexibility for creating custom components with complex features and tight tolerances. It supports both prototyping and production with high repeatability.
At MachMaster, our multi-axis milling centers and automatic tool changers handle operations like drilling, cutting, threading, and surface finishing—all in a single setup. This reduces handling time and ensures dimensional accuracy for parts with intricate geometry.
