Injection Molding Overview

What’s Injection Molding?

Injection molding is a plastic molding method in which molten plastic is injected into a mold and cooled and cured to obtain a plastic product of the desired shape. This method has the advantages of short cycle time, strong adaptability, high productivity, etc. It is widely used in many fields such as home appliances, automobiles, construction, and medical care.

What are the main advantages of injection molding?

  1. High efficiency and productivity: it can realize automatic production, its short molding cycle, easy and quick mold replacement, high production efficiency, very suitable for mass production.
  2. High precision and quality: injection molding can produce plastic products with complex shapes and precise dimensions, with high quality appearance and high consistency and stability.
  3. Wide choice of materials: it is suitable for molding almost all thermoplastics and a variety of thermosetting plastics, and the most suitable material can be selected according to the performance requirements of the product.
  4. Adaptability: Plastic products with inserts, threads or other complex structures can be easily manufactured, providing strong design flexibility.
  5. Raw Material and Cost Savings: The injection molding process has a high utilization rate of plastic raw materials and low waste, helping to reduce production costs.
  6. Environmental protection and recyclability: Plastic materials are recyclable, and injection molded products can be recycled at the end of their life cycle, in line with environmental requirements.

What Are the 6 Stages of Injection Molding?

  1. Preparation: inspection of the injection molding machine, cleaning or replacement of the barrel, drying and color matching of the raw material, adding the raw material to the hopper.
  2. Melting: raw materials are heated, plasticized, melted and homogenized in the barrel to form a melt.
  3. Injection: The melt is injected into the mold cavity at high speed and high pressure, controlling the injection parameters.
  4. Cooling: The plastic is cooled and cured in the mold.
  5. Demolding: The mold is opened and the product is removed.
  6. Post-processing: removal of impurities, trimming, cleaning, inspection and packaging.

What are the common applications of injection molding?

  1. Automotive field: manufacture parts such as instrument panel, door handle, etc.
  2. Electronic industry: manufacturing electronic product shells, brackets and other tiny parts.
  3. Medical Devices: Manufacture medical instruments such as syringes, infusion sets, etc.
  4. Home Appliances: Manufacture products such as chairs, televisions, washing machines, etc.
  5. Consumer Products: Manufacture of plastic bottles, toys, tableware, and other daily necessities.
  6. Aerospace: Manufacture airplane seats, pipes and other components.

Plastic injection molding is an industrial production method, mainly by heating a thermoplastic particle or powder material to a molten state, and then using pressure to inject the molten plastic into a pre-designed mold cavity, to cool and cure the plastic to form the desired shape and size of the plastic product process. The process is widely used in the mass production of a variety of complex, precision, with high consistency of plastic parts, such as electronic equipment shell, automotive parts, daily consumer packaging, toys, furniture accessories and so on.

The whole injection moulding process usual lasts from 2 seconds to 2 minutes. There are four stages in the cycle. These stages are the clamping, injection, cooling and ejection stages.

Tolerances are crucial in injection molding; without proper specification and control, assembly issues can arise. At Machmaster, we adhere to the ISO 2068-c standard for molding tolerances, but can accommodate tighter specifications if needed.

Once you have developed the moulds, the process is extremely fast with cycle times as short as 10 seconds. It is excellent for medium and high-volume production runs for anything from 10,000 parts to well over 100,000 depending on what moulds you use.

It is a widely used plastic product production process. In this process, the thermoplastic is first heated and melted into a state of good fluidity, and then injected into a pre-designed and manufactured mold cavity through the nozzle of an injection molding machine under high pressure. When the plastic has cooled and solidified, the mold is opened and the molded plastic product is removed.
